When and where does THE FIFTY choir meet?
THE FIFTY rehearses twice a week: Wednesday evenings 7:30 to 9:30pm at St Peter's Church Hall, Hinguar Street, Shoebury and Sunday mornings for 45 minutes on Zoom.
Rehearsals are entertaining and fun, but we work hard too. Our members are committed to high standards, singing expressively and elevating the group to be the best it can be. Members are expected to attend 75% of rehearsals.
In addition, our choir members often arrange extra rehearsals for singers in their section, which are optional but extremely helpful.
Who can join THE FIFTY choir?
We are a supportive group of singers who share a passion for performing and a commitment to continuous improvement. We would welcome any like-minded individuals, whether they are experienced singers or people who have a basic level of singing ability.
Membership is open to anyone of 18 years and above, who is comfortable singing in the SSAA range. SSAA refers to the sections of an upper voice choir: soprano 1, soprano 2, alto 1 and alto 2. Singers in the highest section (soprano 1) are generally expected to have the ability to sing a top C (C6), while singers in the lowest part (alto 2) should be capable of singing an E below middle C (E3). We are committed to working with singers to find the best fit within our choir.
What sort of music does the choir sing?
Our songs are varied both in style and in mood to keep it fun and interesting. Some of the songs that we are currently learning are Little Mix's Wings, Holding Out for a Hero and a Gershwin medley.
Do I need to be able to read music?
We do use sheet music in rehearsals. There is no prerequisite for members to already possess the ability to read music, as we are able to teach you everything you need to know. However, we do expect members to actively work on developing these skills over time. Concerts are performed from memory.
What are the benefits of singing in a choir?
Research has shown that singing in a choir is highly beneficial for both the body and the mind. Not only does it provide exercise for the brain and the body, but it also offers numerous advantages such as improved breathing, posture, and muscle tension. Moreover, it releases those feel-good chemicals, endorphins, which elevate our mood and reduce stress. Singing in a choir has also been shown to give us a sense of belonging and community. If you are looking to make new friends, we'd love to have you join us.
Does the choir perform?
We love to perform! There are concerts throughout the year and members are expected to take part in most of these performances.
Do your songs involve movement?
Sometimes, yes. We incorporate movement into our performances when it is deemed suitable and enhances the delivery of a song. The dance moves are generally simple and straightforward, requiring no prior dance experience from the singers. While singing and moving at the same time can be challenging, we provide a supportive environment and offer online resources to facilitate learning and growth in this aspect.
Can I try a session before joining?
Of course! You are very welcome to come along to two Wednesday rehearsals for free to properly meet us and try us out.
Do I need to audition?
Currently, there are no auditions for new members.
How much does it cost?
£22 per month payable by bank transfer. This includes two rehearsals a week during term time, 1-to-1 mentoring each term, sheet music, online rehearsal resources and regular performances.
